Camping les Flots

La Charente is a largely rural area famous for its fields of sunflowers and vineyards, most of which supply the worlds great Cognac distilleries and the famous local aperitif Pineau. There are many delightful little villages throughout the department.

The department capital, Angouleme, 20 minutes from the campsite is an attractive hill town with a charming old centre where you find restaurants to cater for all tastes and many bars. There is also a new modern shopping centre. It has a Romanesque cathedral and you can walk around the ancient town ramparts giving excellent views over the Charente river and countryside. Each September the town is turned into a street racing circuit for the Circuit de Remparts, a weekend of racing and display of vintage and classic racing and sports cars.

About 40 minutes from the campsite is Cognac where the great Cognac houses are open to visitors. Boat trips on the Charente river can be taken from Cognac, nearby Jarnac and also from Angouleme.

There is a choice of four lakeside beaches ranging from 20 to 40 minutes from the campsite and there are a number of golf courses in the area.

The Atlantic coast is about an hour and a half drive away, as is the magnificent city of Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the worlds leading wine producing areas.
